Annual State of Observed Species report released by International Institute for Species Exploration

TEMPE, Ariz. More than half of the 19,232 species newly known to science in 2009, the most recent calendar year of compilation, were insects 9,738 or 50.6 percent according to the 2011 State of Observed Species (SOS) report released Jan. 18 by the International Institute for Species Exploration at Arizona State University.

The second largest group in the 2009 numbers was vascular plants, totaling 2,184 or 11.3 percent. Of the 19,232 in the total count, seven were birds, 41 were mammals and 1,487 were arachnids spiders and mites.

And, according to this latest report, there was a 5.6 percent increase in new living species discovered in 2009, compared to 2008.

The annual SOS report card on the status of human knowledge of Earth's species summarizes what is known about global flora and fauna. The 19,232 species described as "new" or newly discovered during calendar year 2009 represent about twice as many species as were known in the lifetime of Carolus Linnaeus, the Swedish botanist who initiated the modern system of plant and animal names and classifications more than 250 years ago, said the report's author, Quentin Wheeler, an ASU entomologist and founding director of the species institute.

"The cumulative knowledge of species since 1758 when Linnaeus was alive is nearly 2 million, but much remains to be done," Wheeler said. "A reasonable guess is that 10 million additional plant and animal species await discovery by scientists and amateur species explorers."

Additionally, recent macrogenomic surveys of DNA from terrestrial and marine environments have revealed "enormous and previously unsuspected levels of genetic diversity that corresponds in some not-yet-understood way to species diversity," explained Wheeler.

"It has been speculated, for example, that marine microbial species alone could number 20 million," he said.

With those staggering numbers as a backdrop, statistics, or "species bites," from the latest report note that:

  • Almost 24 percent of the new vascular plant species discovered in 2009 were in the monocot order Asparagales, which includes orchids, hyacinths, irises, daffodils, amaryllis, allium, aloe and, of course, asparagus.
  • Year to year, the largest order of newly discovered insects is the beetles, and, 2009 was no exception. Overall, 3,485 new beetle species (Coleoptera) were officially described including rove beetles (568), ground beetles (421), long-horned beetles (369), leaf beetles (356) and scarabs (288).
  • Only 41 new living mammal species were officially described in 2009 and of those, 83 percent were either bats (44 percent) or rodents (39 percent).
  • Almost 90 percent (133) of the new living amphibian species described in 2009 were frogs.
  • There was almost five times more fossil bird species (34) newly described in 2009 than living birds (seven).
  • Typical of most years, the largest number of new fish species was in the order Perciformes and 29 percent of those were in the families Gobiidaw (22) and Cichlidae (11). Gobies include some of the tiniest fish on Earth, and the cichlids include some of the most popular aquarium fish, including the angelfish and damselfish.
  • Of the 626 newly described living crustacean species, 224 (31.8 percent) were in the order Decapoda, which includes crayfish, crabs, lobsters, prawns and shrimp.
  • The Colubridae is the largest family of snakes and in 2009, almost 65 percent of the newly described living snakes were colubrids. In addition to 31 new snakes, new reptile species (living) included 38 lizards, 29 geckos, 12 iguanas, five chameleons and two turtles.
  • More than 13 percent of the new fungus species (living) described in 2009 were gilled mushrooms in the order Agaricales (178). Of the mushrooms, more than one-fifth (21.3 percent) were in the family Marasmiaceae, which includes shiitake mushrooms.

In addition to the living species discovered during 2009, there were 1,905 fossil species, with insects and spiders accounting for 25.6 percent.

"As the number of species increases, so too does our understanding of the biosphere," said Wheeler, a professor in the School of Sustainability and a Senior Sustainability Scientist in the Global Institute of Sustainability at ASU. "It is through knowledge of the unique attributes of species that we illuminate the origin and evolutionary history of life on our planet. As we find out where species live and how they interact, we increase our ability to understand the function of ecosystems and make effective, fact-based decisions regarding conservation."

This is the fourth year for the annual State of Observed Species report compiled by the International Institute for Species Exploration. In addition to the 2011 report, the institute is also releasing a Retro SOS a decade of species discovery in review 2000-2009. The Retro SOS notes that from 2000 through 2009, there were 176,311 newly discovered species.

"It is particularly instructive to understand the tempo and patterns of discovery in recent years," said Wheeler, adding, "Given this data, it is interesting to ponder underlying causes of trends."

The "obvious lesson" from compiling this data, according to Wheeler, is that all nomenclatural acts, including descriptions of new species, must be mandatorily registered going forward. "In the animal world it takes about two years to mine the international literature for evidence of newly named species. The current lack of registration requirements simply compounds the problem of an already massive backlog," he said.

The report notes there are increasing calls for more aggressive and visionary approaches to mapping the species of the biosphere. "The adaptation of cyberinfrastructure to eliminate bottlenecks in the practice of taxonomy has created an opportunity to vastly accelerate species exploration," said Wheeler, who uses the SOS report and the annual naming of the top 10 new species each May, as ways to draw attention to this mission.

The SOS report and the Retro SOS are filled with statistics and charts, including a colorful word cloud. Sara Pennak, assistant director for partnerships and public outreach at the institute, prepared the data synthesis and analysis for the reports, which are available online at http://species.asu.edu.

Partners in this effort include: Algae Base. MycoBank, International Journal of Systematic and Evolutionary Microbiology, World Register of Marine Species (WoRMS), Thomson Reuters Zoological Record, International Plant Names Index, UniProt and Taxatoy.

'Dance Moms': Return Of The Candy Apple Girls (VIDEO)

Last night on "Dance Moms" (Tue., 9 p.m. EST on Lifetime) there was a showdown in Ohio between Abby Lee Miller and her nemesis, Cathy Nesbitt.

Abby's dancers were going head-to-head against Cathy's Candy Apple Girls in a contest, and things turned really ugly between the so-called adults.

With accusations of cheating, over-age girls competing and industrial espionage conducted with the aid of cocktails, Cathy and Abby faced off in front of the moms.

Cue some awesome apple-related insults -- "that woman [is] rotten to the core!" -- and put-downs.

Accused of deliberately aping the Candy Apples' color scheme for her dancer's costumes, Abby can't remember exactly when she started dressing her girls in red and black, but thinks it was some time in the 1980s. Cathy sweetly jabs a finger in her direction and says "better give me a birth certificate on that!" Me-ow.

When Abby accuses Cathy of dissing her behind her back, Chloe's mom Christi wades into the fray and the insults really start to fly.

Cathy (a.k.a. "Granny") takes on Christi ("The Nose") in a no-holds barred slanging match in front of the other moms and some of the kids.

After a heated debate over the merits of Christi's dress, "The Nose" finally dismisses her opponent with the somewhat confusing order to "Go back to Junior High, Grandma!"

Follow the antics of Abby and the girls on "Dance Moms" every Tuesday at 9 p.m. EST on Lifetime.

Pets and the Elderly | Breastfeed

Studies have shown that pets can extend a persons life by up to seven years. Those who have pets report higher levels of satisfaction than those who do not have animal companions. Having a pet can also reduce stress or loneliness, and inspire a person to get more exercise.

The many benefits of pets explain why pets are used as therapy dogs. Pets that pass appropriate tests and receive appropriate certification are used in all sorts of settings. Pets may visit childrens? hospitals or cancer wards to provide the patients with a moment of happiness and comfort. Certified therapy dogs also visit nursing homes, to bring happiness to senior citizens. The documented health benefits of time spent with a therapy dog are remarkable, and it is clear that even a brief period spent with a calm and loving dog can make a strong impact.

Because of the positive health effects, many senior citizens can benefit from the companionship of an animal.

Those senior citizens living in their own homes, either alone or with spouses or children, can have a far greater quality of life if they have a companion. A dog can provide the impetus necessary to get a senior citizen out of the house and into the community. A dog encourages senior citizens to exercise and stay active. A dog can help a senior citizen living alone to feel less lonely or isolated. Finally, a dog can provide protection, especially for elderly women living alone.

However, a senior citizen must take into account the high energy level of a puppy, and the type of breed that they are interested in having. Puppies and very high energy breeds such as beagles or Jack Russell terriers require a great deal of walking and exercise in order to avoid boredom which can lead to destructive behavior.

Therefore, a senior citizen who is not very active will want to avoid breeds that require walks that exceed the boundaries of the human?s comfort level.

Older dogs, or rescue dogs, may be the ideal choice for senior citizens looking for a companion. These older dogs are generally past the puppy state and are content to have a human to sit with them on the couch, pet them, scratch their bellies, and otherwise share a calm and comfortable life. The relationship between a rescue dog and a senior citizen can have a very positive impact both for dog and owner alike.

Senior citizens also want to be aware that they must make arrangements or accommodations for their pets, in case the owner becomes unable to care for the pet for whatever reason. Often, family members or close relatives are willing to assist in the care of a dog or a cat, should the senior citizen become unable to care for the pet themselves. This option should be discussed prior to the situation arising, so the responsibility for the dog or cat is clearly assigned should its owner become unable to care for it.

In reading online pet memorials, it is clear that people form very strong bonds with their animal companions. Animal companions are treated as family members, sleeping with their owners and being memorialized with pet urns or pet headstones when they eventually pass. This level of emotional attachment can be very healthy for everyone, but especially for seniors who are in need of day-to-day companionship.

Houston-area storms cause massive street flooding, tornado damage

KHOU.com

Posted on January 9, 2012 at 3:28 PM

Updated yesterday at 7:31 PM

HOUSTON ? A cluster of severe storms moved through the Houston area Monday morning, creating dangerous conditions on the roads and dumping up to six?inches of rain.?The winds also kicked up, including at least?two confirmed tornadoes.

A twister damaged several homes in a Mission Bend subdivision in Fort Bend County. Baset Jalili and her family had to run for cover when the tornado hit?their house near Gaines and Bissonnet.?

"You can hear it, it just starts getting louder?the wind hitting the house," said?Jalili. "The front door was actually locked. It just flew open. I took my mom and sister, we just took cover in the closet until it calmed down a little bit."

They weren't hurt, but their house, garage and roof were damaged. Other houses in the area also have damage.?

The same tornado caused damage near Highway 6 in southwest Harris County. An O?Reilly?s gas station between Beechnut and Bellaire is cleaning up storm damage tonight. Nearby, the tornado flipped four trailers at a business. Workers were inside some of those trailers, but no one was seriously?hurt.

A tornado also touched down at Mall of the Mainland

in Texas City around 1 p.m., according to the National Weather Service.Customers inside said everything suddenly started blowing around about 1 p.m. The wind peeled back the mall's roof in at least three spots and that sent rain gushing through "like a river."

There's 2 to 3 inches of water?throughout the mall.

Dow and Debbie James were at a?movie theater in the mall?when the tornado hit.

"We heard a big noise. The roof collapsed in what was a game room," Dow James said. "And the roof blew away, and water come rushing into the mall area."

"It was like a flash flood in the mall," said Debbie James. "The water started pouring in."

At least one wall was damaged and could collapse any time, according to the Texas City Fire Marshal.

Some vehicles in the parking lot had their windows blown out.

The mall was evacuated and there were no reports of injuries.

The mall remained closed indefinitely.

Hundreds of drivers were stranded?by high water throughout the Greater Houston area and in surrounding counties.?

Houston fire crews were called out to rescue some frantic drivers as the water rose around their stalled cars. An?HFD spokesman said?they couldn?t get to some streets because the water was too high?even for their trucks.

Major closures included: Highway 288 at the South Loop; Westpark Tollway at the South Post Oak ramp; Allen Parkway west of downtown; and Highway 90 between Richmond and Rosenberg in Fort Bend County.

Highway 288 reopened around 3:30 p.m. Monday. Water had receded in most other areas, but Allen Parkway was still flooded during afternoon rush hour.

?I?ve been watching the rain gauge tick up and up and up,? said KHOU Meteorologist David Paul. ?288, on the south side, had almost 5 inches of rainfall in about an hour and that?s overwhelmed the primary?drainage there.?

It was a similar story all over the area?including the Galleria,?Montrose and Greenway Plaza?as flash flooding caught people off guard.?

A Flood Warning was in effect until 11:54 p.m. Monday for Harris County.

?If you don?t have to go out, don?t do it, because this is going to be an absolute mess,? said? Paul.??It is dangerous out there.??

Rainfall totals reached up to 6 inches by 10:30 a.m. in Conroe, according to Paul. Braes Bayou guages also showed 5 to 6 inches of rain in southwest Houston.

Most areas in Harris County and other surrounding counties?had at least three inches of rain by 11:30 a.m.

The pounding rain was letting up in many areas by noon, but it?s going to take a while for the water to recede.??

CenterPoint?Energy said more than 20,000 customers were without power. The Houston Independent School District reported intermittant outages at the Love, Cullen and Looscan campuses.

Slacker and Verizon show off new tablet optimized version of Slacker Radio

Slacker Radio for Tablets

A new, tablet optimized version of Slacker Radio has made an appearance at CES. Currently being shown off using the Motorola XYBOARD's from Verizon coupled with 4G LTE to take advantage of fast load times.

This new version of Slacker Radio is looking pretty pleasing to the eyes as it incorporates new visual styling with the navigation layout occupying the maximum amount of viewing area that tablets provide. You can preview before playing stations, browse for content in either a vertical or horizontal position making song lyrics, artist profiles, album reviews and more easy to find, and share with others as well.

Sadly, Slacker hasn't mentioned when it will be available for everyone as of yet but like most things from CES -- something to look forward to in the next little while.

Wall Street flat in breather after hitting 5-month high (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters) ? The S&P 500 index was little changed on Wednesday as investors shrugged off warnings about further weakness in the euro from a lack of leadership in tackling the euro zone debt crisis.

U.S. stocks fell for most of the morning as the euro weakened against the U.S. dollar to its lowest in 16 months after Fitch Ratings warned of dire consequences if the European Central Bank did not take more action to support the currency.

But in a sign of the diminishing link between U.S. equities and the movement of the embattled currency, the S&P recovered most of the losses by afternoon trade.

"There has been a delinking of the U.S. and European markets that speaks to the fact the U.S. is not going into a recession and Europe probably is, though I think it will be mild," said Jeffrey Saut, chief investment strategist at Raymond James Financial in St. Petersburg, Florida.

"There's a flight to safety out of Europe and into our markets, and the world is greatly underinvested in U.S. stocks. That decoupling shovels even more money into the U.S," he said.

Analysts say U.S. stocks are undervalued compared to other markets, buoyed by a strong corporate sector and signs of a sustainable U.S. economic recovery.

The Dow Jones industrial average (.DJI) was down 31.45 points, or 0.25 percent, at 12,431.02. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index (.SPX) was down 1.05 points, or 0.08 percent, at 1,291.03. The Nasdaq Composite Index (.IXIC) was up 5.41 points, or 0.20 percent, at 2,707.91. The Dow and S&P 500 hit five-month highs on Tuesday.

Energy shares led equities lower as U.S. crude futures posted their fourth decline in five days. The S&P energy sector index (.GSPE) fell 1.3 percent and an index of oil services companies (.OSX) dropped 1.6 percent.

Further reflecting the weakening link between the euro zone and U.S. stock market, the 50-day correlation between the S&P 500 e-mini futures contract and the euro crossed the zero line this week after four months of being in positive territory, indicating they were no longer on the same path.

Supervalu Inc (SVU.N) shares dropped 12.2 percent to $7.37 after quarterly sales at the third-largest U.S. supermarket chain missed estimates.

Clothing retailer Urban Outfitters Inc (URBN.O), grappling with inventory and declining margins, said its chief executive resigned unexpectedly, sending the company's shares tumbling 16.7 percent to $24.52.

On the Nasdaq, Crocs (CROX.O) shares rose 15.2 percent to $18.38 after the shoemaker said it expects fourth-quarter revenue to be at the high end of its earlier estimate, becoming the latest footwear company to flag strong sales numbers for the holiday season.

Instant View: Factory sector strengthens in December (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? Manufacturing activity picked up nationwide in December, with new orders and employment improving, according to a national survey of purchasing managers.

CONSTRUCTION SPENDING:

U.S. construction spending surged to a near 1-1/2 year high in November as investment in public and private projects rose solidly, cementing expectations of strong economic growth in the fourth quarter.

KEY POINTS: * The Institute for Supply Management (ISM) said its index of national factory activity rose to 53.9 from 52.7 the month before. The reading topped expectations of 53.2, according to a Reuters poll of economists. * A reading above 50 indicates expansion. * New orders, which economists consider a leading indicator of future activity in the sector, rose to 57.6 from 56.7. The employment component also jumped to 55.1 from 51.8.

COMMENTS:

BRADLEY J. HOLCOMB, CHAIR, ISM MANUFACTURING BUSINESS SURVEY

COMMITTEE:

"The December PMI rose nicely to 53.9; with new orders, production and employment all growing from November. Inventories at 47.1. Customer inventories fell back and prices decreased for the third consecutive month. So overall 2011 it's finishing on an upswing with a lot of indicators pointing positive.

"Many industries showed increases in new orders. Comments showed the auto industry to be very strong and continuing to be strong. Even miscellaneous manufacturing was strong so in general the strength is pretty broad-based.

"The very nice increase of 3.3 percent to 55.1 on the employment index was consistent with our recent semi-annual report and portends well for 2012 for the next few months continuing to grow. Employment will fit right in there. Manufacturers will hire, as needed, to continue this growth trend."

As to how manufacturing fared during 2011: "We did see a number of ups and downs. It's rebounding towards the end of the year. On the whole it was a solid year. It was a bit frustrating along the way, but it ended nicely.

"Manufacturing is well positioned for continued growth into 2012.

"Momentum is solid. I wouldn't say strong, but solid. If I couple this report with the December semi-annual report there is optimism for 2012 and this December finish positions us well for that."

JOHN DOYLE, CURRENCY STRATEGIST AT TEMPUS CONSULTING IN

WASHINGTON:

"We were in a risk-on environment to begin with this morning and this adds to that story. I expect the euro, the euro/dollar especially, to stay in a tight range for the day. I think we feel a little more relief over (the U.S. economy) the last month or two months, but overall there's still that nagging in the back of your mind. Moving forward the European debt crisis has not gone away. It's the global economy, negative economic events overseas eventually trickle back to the U.S. At least for the first two quarters of this year, until we see a long stream of positive data, people are going to be wary of U.S. growth."

ANDREW WILKINSON, CHIEF ECONOMIC STRATEGIST, MILLER TABAK & CO.,

NEW YORK:

"The report is another good surprise for the new year. It was encouraging to see the jump in new orders and employment. From a trade perspective it is also encouraging to see that export orders expanded from the last month. Data from the first report of the year is encouraging and it shows further expansion that conflicts with the clouds hanging over the euro zone economy."

JAKE DOLLARHIDE, CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER, LONGBOW ASSET

MANAGEMENT, TULSA, OKLAHOMA:

"The big news is that there's no negative news coming out of Europe, so investors can focus on the improving economy and our improving economic data. That we continue to make progress towards a full recovery is more important than any specific data. People are very optimistic that 2012 will prove to be a big year for the recovery and the stock market.

"Construction spending is key to show that confidence in the economy can be sustained going forward, and that it isn't just a one-month issue. This is one more piece of the puzzle to show that the economy will turn around."

CARY LEAHEY, MANAGING DIRECTOR AND SENIOR ECONOMIST, DECISION

ECONOMICS, NEW YORK:

"It's a pretty good report. Decent gains in orders and production. After a number above 50 in the Chinese number and an improvement in the UK and European figures, these are a nice start for the new year. The market will take this as another confirmation of a decent employment report this Friday. The stock market will like this. The fly in the ointment is that we have had waves of enthusiasm about the near-term outlook but that did not last for more than three or four months so the market does not believe the good news about the fourth quarter will carry over until 2012."

TOM PORCELLI, CHIEF US ECONOMIST, RBC CAPITAL MARKETS, NEW YORK

"It's a pretty decent report overall. Underlying details are also fairly solid. I think it's important-this is a not-too-hot, not-too-cold report. We're not roaring ahead here but it's also not collapsing. That's consistent with our overall view of the economy in 2012.

"The one thing that obviously is certainly encouraging is to see the employment index rise. That's certainly a positive development. The new orders index, this is a multi-month high. That's definitely an encouraging development. This is the best we've seen since April in new orders. What that means for manufacturing is that yeah manufacturing activity should be sustained because of these new orders."

MARKET REACTION:

STOCKS: U.S. stock indexes added slightly to gains BONDS: U.S. bond prices extended losses slightly FOREX: The dollar was modestly lower against the euro

Obama makes recess appointments to labor board (Reuters)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? President Barack Obama used so-called recess appointments on Wednesday to fill three vacant seats on the National Labor Relations Board, sidestepping congressional Republicans who had obstructed his nominations for a second time in the same day.

Obama used his presidential power to install Sharon Block, Terence Flynn and Richard Griffin to the NLRB, following his decision to appoint Richard Cordray as the head of the country's new consumer financial watchdog earlier on Wednesday.

"We can't wait to act to strengthen the economy and restore security for our middle class and those trying to get in it, and that's why I am proud to appoint these fine individuals to get to work for the American people," Obama said in a statement.

The NLRB has been a target of Republican criticism who view it as favoring the labor movement, a key part of Obama's support base as he campaigns for reelection in November.

It was involved in a politically charged case last year with Boeing Co which Republicans used to slam Democrat Obama, and last month ruled to shorten the time frame for union elections which the labor movement welcomed.

"The American people deserve to have qualified public servants fighting for them every day - whether it is to enforce new consumer protections or uphold the rights of working Americans," Obama said.

Local Yellow Ribbon Community group takes off

MARSHALL - When the city of Marshall was named a Yellow Ribbon Community this past fall, it wasn't so much a goal achieved as the beginning of a lot of work to help local troops, Denise Schneekloth said. In the months since September, a variety of community volunteers have continued to work on building a formal support network for military servicepeople and their families.

There's still a lot for community members to do, said Schneekloth, the facilitator of Marshall's Yellow Ribbon Community committee. However, the response so far has been encouraging.

"We are amazed by the community and how supportive they are," she said.

Marshall was officially proclaimed a Yellow Ribbon Community on Sept. 11, as part of the statewide Beyond the Yellow Ribbon campaign. In order to become Yellow Ribbon Communities, cities have to submit an action plan to provide comprehensive support services for military servicepeople and their families.

Marshall's Yellow Ribbon Community group formed in spring 2011.

"It was too important of an issue for us not to be a part of," Schneekloth said. While the National Guard unit based out of Marshall is not currently deployed, there are still area soldiers who are serving overseas, or who are trying to get back into civilian life.

The Marshall Yellow Ribbon Community group's first official meeting was held in December, and another is coming up in February. Schneekloth said the committee is continuing to develop its action plan, as well as working on future projects.

"Different aspects of the community are pulling together," Schneekloth said of the group. The Marshall action plan calls for representatives from several key areas, from social services and veterans organizations to local businesses, city government and public safety. Different groups can commit to providing different forms of support for local soldiers.

For example, Schneekloth said, the Marshall Area Chamber of Commerce will be working with local businesses to help find employment and training opportunities for military personnel, "To be supportive of those folks when they come back from deployment." Faith-based groups and some local churches have offered counseling for military couples and families. Marshall schools have provided space for re-integration events for area troops and allowed Yellow Ribbon Community organizers to form support groups for youth in military families, she said.

Some parts of the action plan may need to be updated or changed as the work goes on, Schneekloth said.

Future projects the group will be working on include building a list of civic organizations that may be interested in doing volunteer work for servicepeople or military families. The Chamber of Commerce is also working on plans for a local military appreciation week to be held this spring, Schneekloth said.

"It's nice to see the mix of people come together," Schneekloth said of the group's efforts.

"We're also looking to do some visual things in Marshall," she added, which will include signs identifying the city as a Yellow Ribbon Community.

A Yellow Ribbon Community committee meeting will be held on Feb. 8, at the Marshall National Guard Armory, Schneekloth said. She encouraged people or community groups who are interested in being a part of Yellow Ribbon Community efforts to visit the Beyond the Yellow Ribbon website, beyondtheyellowribbon.org. Contact information for the Marshall community group can be found at beyondtheyellowribbon.org/marshall.

Ravens beat Bengals 24-16 for AFC North title (AP)

CINCINNATI ? The Ravens boarded their plane with commemorative championship caps and headed for the only place they want to be at this time of the year.

Homeward bound. And very happy.

Baltimore clinched the AFC North title with a 24-16 victory over Cincinnati on Sunday, completing a perfect run through one of the NFL's toughest divisions. The Ravens finished tied with Pittsburgh at 12-4 but had the tiebreaker with their two head-to-head wins.

The Bengals made it, too, getting every bit of help they needed right up to the end. Cincinnati (9-7) didn't beat a playoff-caliber team all season, going 0-7, but advanced to the postseason when the Jets and the Broncos also lost on Sunday.

Baltimore hadn't won the division since 2006, making the playoffs the last three years as a wild card and coming up short of the Super Bowl. The Ravens made it an overriding goal to get home-field advantage this time around. Their win on Sunday left them with the conference's No. 2 seed and a first-round bye followed by a game at home, where they are 8-0.

"Especially in the way we did it, to go undefeated in a division that has three playoffs teams is a pretty big accomplishment," said Joe Flacco, who was 15 of 19 for 130 yards with a touchdown.

Ray Rice had touchdown runs of 70 and 51 yards, and Baltimore's defense finished it off by knocking down Andy Dalton's desperation pass into the end zone as the clock ran out. Ravens players raised their helmets in celebration, ran off the field and donned championship shirts and caps.

"This is a great achievement, especially when you consider whatever doubters we had," linebacker Ray Lewis said. "We swept our whole division. Now the world comes to Baltimore."

The Bengals learned during the final seconds that they had secured their third playoff berth in the last 21 years despite the loss.

No hats or shirts for the Bengals, though. They exchanged congratulatory hand slaps with a few fans as they left the field, and that was it for the celebration.

"It's kind of weird," said Dalton, who was 22 of 44 for 232 yards with no interceptions or touchdowns. "Obviously we didn't get it done today, but we still have a chance."

Cincinnati will play next Saturday at Houston, which clinched the AFC South title by beating the Bengals 20-19 at Paul Brown Stadium on Dec. 11. Dalton is 3-0 at Reliant Stadium, where he played two games in high school and one at TCU.

With Paul Brown packed to capacity with Bengals fans for the first time all season, Rice made the biggest plays on a blustery afternoon that made it tough to throw. He had a career-best 70-yard touchdown run on the fourth play.

Rice also broke a 51-yard touchdown run on a third-and-1 play with 5:41 to go, essentially finishing Cincinnati's chances of yet another big comeback. Rice finished with 191 yards on 24 carries and set a club record with his 15th touchdown of the season.

"To be able to win the division on the road to secure a home playoff game, the feeling in that locker room was like no other," Rice said.

Baltimore's defense had a hand in it, too. Linebacker Terrell Suggs hit tight end Jermaine Gresham after a catch, jarring the ball loose. Three plays later, Rice went 51 yards to put the Ravens on the verge of a title.

Suggs sacked Dalton, forcing the Bengals to settle for a field goal on their next possession. Cincinnati got the ball back at its 20 with 1:05 to go and no timeouts left, but came up short on Dalton's final pass into the end zone.

"This feels good," Suggs said. "You just have to take it in."

During that final, futile drive, the Broncos' score was shown on the videoboard, drawing a loud cheer from the crowd of 63,439. Some of the Bengals saw it, too. Others didn't know what had happened.

"I heard the crowd and I asked somebody, `Was there a penalty on that play?'" cornerback Nate Clements said. "He said, `Denver lost. We're in.' I still wasn't sure. Then we came into the locker room and they confirmed it."

The Bengals stayed in playoff contention by pulling off comebacks, overcoming double-digit deficits in the second half three times. They put themselves in position for another one when Bernard Scott broke a 25-yard touchdown run late in the third quarter. Mike Nugent's 46-yard field goal cut it to 17-13 early in the fourth quarter, but Rice put it away.

Notes: The Ravens also won the division in 2003 and 2006. ... Rice joined Hall of Famer Marshall Faulk as the only players with 1,000 yards rushing and 700 receiving in more than one season. ... Suggs has a career-high 14 sacks, one shy of Peter Boulware's club record from 2001. ... Ricky Williams carried six times for 28 yards and became the 26th player in NFL history to run for 10,000 yards in his career. ... K Billy Cundiff was back after missing one game with a sore left calf. He made a 42-yard field goal into the wind. ... It's the third time in the last four years that an AFC North team went 6-0 in the division ? Pittsburgh did it in 2008 and Cincinnati in 2009. ... Bengals K Mike Nugent made three field goals, giving him a team-record 33 for the season. ... The Bengals haven't won a playoff game since 1990.
