(AP) ? President Barack Obama sees the presidential contest as a clutch moment in his favorite sporting moment ? the fourth quarter of a taut basketball game.

Fundraising with the help of current and former National Basketball Association stars, Obama told a small group of donors gathered Wednesday night at Alice Tully Hall in Lincoln Center that the current campaign is like the final minutes of a basketball contest with his team up by a few points

"But the other side is coming strong," Obama said. "And they play a little dirty. We've got a few folks on our team in foul trouble. We have a couple of injuries. And I believe they have one last run in them."

Obama raised $3 million with the help of the players, who included former Chicago Bulls player Michael Jordan and former Knicks Walt Frazier and Bill Bradley. NBA Commissioner David Stern also was there.

Invoking Jordan's competitive nature, Obama concluded: "If you have seven minutes to go and you have a little bit of a lead, that's when you put them away."

The players were part a day long fundraiser. Earlier, former and current players participated in a $250 per person autograph session and in a skills camp priced at for $5,000 for two people.

"It is very rare that I come to an event where I'm like the fifth or sixth most interesting person," Obama joked at the Lincoln Center dinner.

Later, Obama changed out of his dark suit to shoot baskets with some of the players out of sight of the press. Obama, an avid basketball fan and a player, made a splash during his 2008 campaign by sinking a 3-point shot while visiting troops in Kuwait. His most recent star-studded game, also played in private, featured actors George Clooney and Tobey Maguire.

Best Buy 2Q profit drops 90 pct, misses estimates

NEW YORK (AP) ? Best Buy Co. is reporting a 90 percent drop in net income during the second quarter, dragged down by restructuring charges and weak sales. The company also withdrew its earnings guidance for the year.

The poor report was announced a day after Best Buy name Hubert Joly, former CEO of the Carlson travel company as its new CEO and president. The chain is also waging a public fight with its former chairman and co-founder Richard Schulze, who wants to take the company private.

The company also said it is halting stock buybacks for fiscal 2013 during the CEO transition. Shares of Best Buy fell almost 10 percent, or $1.76 to $16.40 on the news, following a 10 percent decline the day before on disappointment over Best Buy's CEO choice.

The nation's largest consumer electronics chain said Tuesday that it earned $12 million, or 4 cents per share, in the quarter ended Aug. 4. That compares with $128 million, or 34 cents per share.

Revenue declined nearly 3 percent to $10.55 billion.

Adjusted earnings were 20 cents per share. Analysts had expected 31 cents per share on revenue of $10.65 billion.

Revenue at stores open at least 14 months fell 3.2 percent for the entire business, including a 1.6 percent drop in its domestic business and an 8.2 percent decline in its international division. The measure is a key indicator of a retailer's health. Analysts had expected a 2.6 percent decline for the total business.

Best Buy said that U.S. sales growth in tablets, mobile phones, appliances and e-readers helped offset declines in gaming, digital imaging, televisions and notebook computers. The company said the international business was dragged down by lower revenue in China, Canada and increased competition in Europe.

Best Buy is hoping that Joly can turn around the company and bring stability that has been badly lacking. Joly, who is French and is expected to take over as CEO in early September when his visa is secured, succeeds Mike Mikan, a board member who has served as interim CEO since former CEO Brian Dunn resigned. Dunn left in April amid a company investigation into an "improper relationship" with a 29-year-old female employee.

Schulze resigned as chairman a month later after the probe found that he knew about the relationship and failed to alert the board or human resources.

Best Buy has struggled with weak sales since the middle of the recession as its big-box stores have become outdated. It's also contending with changing buyer habits. The stores, which shoppers once flocked to for low-priced music, movies and electronics, are becoming unprofitable as customers increasingly use them to browse for electronics, but then buy them cheaper elsewhere.

Best Buy has seen annual declines in revenue at stores open at least a year for two of the last three years. It posted a 1.8 percent drop in the latest fiscal year that ended March 3, a modest 0.6 percent gain in fiscal 2011 and a 1.3 percent decline in fiscal 2010.

Before the scandal with Dunn, the company begun to address its problems. In March, it announced a major restructuring that includes closing 50 stores, cutting 400 corporate jobs and trimming $800 million in costs.

Since then, interim CEO Mikan has been making strong statements about how he plans to restructure the company, focusing on services and revamping stores. In early July, Best Buy said it would lay off 600 staffers in its Geek Squad technical support division and 1,800 other store workers. The company also has been shrinking store size and focusing on its more-profitable products such as mobile phones.

But analysts ? and investors ? have been impatient. Analysts say some of these changes are too late. They also say that Best Buy needs to close more of its big-box stores, which no longer are necessary since people have shifted from buying big computers and TVs to snapping up smaller items like tablets and mobile phones.

Wall Street has been equally unforgiving of Best Buy's timing. Best Buy shares have lost nearly 70 percent of their value since their pre-recession peak of $56.66 in May 2006.

One of the most vocal critics of the company in recent months has been the company's co-founder. Earlier this month, Schulze, who has a 20 percent stake in the company, made a takeover offer for the chain, offering $24 to $26 per share. Best Buy had said it was considering the offer, which values the company at $8.84 billion.

Schulze said Thursday that he was committed to his offer for the electronics retailer and has heard from a number of private equity firms prepared to make "significant commitments." But Best Buy and Schulze went back and forth in public announcements over the weekend.

In a statement issued by Best Buy Sunday, it laid out certain terms for acquisition talks to proceed. Schulze rejected the terms, citing a company requirement that he forgo taking any offer directly to shareholder for 18 months as unacceptable.

New Canaan Autism walk/run event takes off Friday evening ...

Sponsors of the ?All Out for Autism? 5K Walk/Run include, from left: Alex Stewart, manager Walter Stewart?s Market; Judi Anders, president of SPED*NET; Carolynn Kaufman, director of special needs, New Canaan YMCA; Steve Karl, vice president of Karl Chevrolet, and Ron Rosenfeld, co-owner of New Balance of New Canaan.

The fourth annual New Canaan ?All Out for Autism? 5K Walk/Run road race, on Friday evening, Aug. 24, at 6, will raise money for children with special needs at the New Canaan YMCA. The race starts and ends at the New Balance New Canaan store on Main Street.

Sponsors of the race include New Balance, SPED*NET New Canaan, New Canaan YMCA, Karl Chevrolet, Joe?s Pizza, Rosie, Walter Stewart?s Market, and Oxygen Fitness.

?The fitness area at Waveny that our previous races helped to fund, has proven to be a great addition to the New Canaan community, used by senior citizens, high school students and those with special needs,? Ron Rosenfeld, owner of the local New Balance store, said. ?Everyone is talking about it and it?s grown to be more than we ever imagined. This year?s race will help fund three separate events at the local YMCA, designed for children with special needs, that will be open to the whole community and offer an opportunity for people to get to know each other.?

Rosenfeld and his wife, Tina, had observed parents coming into the store to buy shoes for their child, unaccompanied by the child, then coming back months later to buy new shoes, still without their child. When the parents remarked that their child had autism, the Rosenfelds opened the store after hours to accommodate the families and began asking how else they could help.

They joined forces with SPED*NET, a local nonprofit that serves families with special needs children, and began to help raise funds for a multi-generational community outdoor fitness area that would help relieve the isolation many families felt. The fitness center opened last fall.

The 2012 ?All Out for Autism? race begins at the New Balance store at 6:30 and winds through downtown New Canaan and neighboring streets.

New Balance shoes will be awarded to the top three overall 5K winners (male and female), and New Balance gift certificates will be presented to the top three in each age category (male and female). A separate, quarter-mile children?s fun run will begin at 6:15.

Pre-registration, available at New Balance or online at alloutforautism.org, is $20 up until today, Thursday, Aug. 23. Race-day registration is $25. The fee for New Canaan High School Students is $10. Runners should check-in before the race at the store. Pre-registered racers will receive a complimentary T-shirt and refreshments will be served following the race.

?Karl Chevrolet joins New Balance in underwriting the ?All Out for Autism? race again this year because events like these highlight health, family fitness and community,? said Steve Karl, vice president. ?We?ve been involved since the beginning in helping to raise funds for the now-completed fitness area, which has added so much to the quality of life for many families in town, and are pleased to support these new programs at the Y.

?We also love the way these races bring people to the downtown area, which is great for New Canaan. And since New Canaan celebrates its second annual ?Restaurant Week? beginning on the 24th, we encourage families to come for the race and then stay and try one of our great restaurants in town,? he said.

?There are about 500 students in the New Canaan public schools with an IEP [Individual Education Plan], and nationally, one in every 88 children born today is diagnosed with autism,? said Judi Anders, president of SPED*NET and mother of a child with autism. ?It?s the fastest-growing serious developmental disability.?

Saver's Credit: Additional Motivation | Home Finance Help

The IRS?s saver?s credit, gives low to moderate income workers an additional reason to start saving in a 401K or other retirement plans. Not only do you still get the usual advantages of tax savings through reducing your income and tax deferral until retirement, you also get a tax credit. The IRS has called this term the ?saver?s credit.?

The credit was introduced in 2001 to encourage low to moderate income earners to start contributing towards retirement plans.

A tax credit is awarded between 10% and 50% for the first $2,000 of contributions in your retirement plan. The higher your salary the more the credit is phased out. The savers credit works for 401Ks, 403B?s, 457?s, Thrift Savings Programs, and IRA?s.

401K Tax Credit Eligibility

  • Minimum of 18 years old
  • Can not be claimed as a dependent or be a full time student
  • Married couples who file jointly with an income of less then $53,000
  • Married filing separately or singles with a income of less then $26,500
  • Head of household with income less then $39,750

Here?s How it Works

Screenshot 13 Savers Credit: Additional Motivation

The contributor sees a decrease of $500 on taxes, and $2,000 saved for retirement.

I know it doesn?t sound like much, but it makes a difference. Plug your information into a 401K Paycheck Calculator to see how this little effort produces large results. Even $50 a paycheck can reduce your taxes and give you a nice income during retirement.

In order to get the exact credit to your taxes, fill out Form 8880. It can be found at IRS?s Website.

To find out if you?re eligible for the saver?s credit, it?s best to consult a tax professional who knows about your specific circumstance. This is a great example of how a tax professional can find you savings to pay for their services.

CANADA FX DEBT-C$ in modest retreat after soft inflation data

Fri Aug 17, 2012 4:44pm EDT

* Canadian CPI weaker than expected in July * C$ ends at C$0.9891 to the $US, or $1.0110 * Bond yields fall By Solarina Ho TORONTO, Aug 17 (Reuters) - The Canadian dollar pared back gains against the U.S. dollar on Friday after the country's inflation data were weaker than expected in July, diminishing odds the Bank of Canada will hike interest rates anytime soon. Consumers paid less for clothing and fuels such as gasoline and natural gas in the month compared with a year earlier, easing the annual inflation rate to 1.3 percent from 1.5 percent in June. Analysts had expected inflation to be unchanged from June. "This morning's CPI report was obviously a little bit weaker than the market was expecting. It does give reason for the Canadian dollar to fall today," said Greg Moore, FX Strategist at TD Securities, but added that the currency will likely continue to test the C$0.9800 level. "Today's moves really weren't that far outside of the bull range that's been persisting for the past month ... Regardless of the small moves today which you can credit to the CPI release, it doesn't really say much about where the currency might go in the next few days," said Moore. Canada's dollar ended the session at C$0.9891 to the U.S. dollar, or $1.0110, weaker than Thursday's close at C$0.9867, or $1.0135. It fell as low as C$0.9902 to the U.S. dollar, or $1.0099 following the inflation data. "We are medium term CAD bulls; but are concerned that in the near-term CAD might have gotten a bit ahead of itself here. Regardless, parity has become a very comfortable place for CAD and we do not expect a substantial move in either direction," Camilla Sutton, Chief Currency Strategist at Scotiabank, wrote in a note. Overnight index swaps, which trade based on expectations for the central bank's key policy rate, showed that traders slightly decreased bets on any chance of a rate hike after the inflation data. The Federal Reserve's FOMC minutes will be closely watched next week for further currency direction, while Bank of Canada Governor Mark Carney is expected to speak at an event. Market watchers will look closely for any change in the Canadian central bank's hawkish tone. The Canadian dollar also backed off from a record high against the euro hit in the previous session, though it rallied against the Australian dollar on Friday, touching its strongest level since late June. Canadian bond prices picked up and yields fell following the disappointing inflation data. The interest-rate sensitive two-year bond rose 7.5 Canadian cents, yielding 1.201 percent, while the benchmark 10-year bond was up 13 Canadian cents, yielding 1.949 percent.

Get A Safer Car For Cheap Auto Insurance Quotes | Kerry Out

People who drive what insurance companies refer to as safer cars are often considered for cheap auto insurance quotes. This is because cars that are safe are rarely involved in accidents. The sad news is that most car owners take the safety of their cars for granted because they do not know the consequences. A car that is not roadworthy will cost the owner high premiums because its chances of causing accidents are higher. These are the little things that matter to an insurance company.

Staining Science: Capillary Action of Dyed Water in Plants

MOVIN' ON UP: In this cross-section, we can see capillary action tugging dye upwards through the plant's cells. Image: George Retseck

Key concepts
Plant biology
Capillary action
Water
Dyes

Introduction
Have you ever heard someone say, "That plant is thirsty," or "Give that plant a drink of water."? We know that all plants need water to survive, even bouquets of cut flowers and plants living in deserts. But have you ever thought about how water moves within the plant? In this activity, you'll put carnations in dyed water to figure out where the water goes. Where do you think the dyed water will travel, and what will this tell you about how the water moves in the cut flowers?

Background
Plants use water to keep their roots, stems, leaves and flowers healthy as well as prevent them from drying and wilting. The water is also used to carry dissolved nutrients throughout the plant.

Most of the time, plants get their water from the ground. This means it has to transport the water from its roots up and throughout the rest of the plant. How does it do this? Water moves through the plant by means of capillary action. Capillary action occurs when the forces binding a liquid together (cohesion and surface tension) and the forces attracting that bound liquid to another surface (adhesion) are greater than the force of gravity. Through these binding and surface forces, the plant's stem basically sucks up water?almost like drinking through a straw!

A simple way of observing capillary action is to take a teaspoon of water and gently pour it in a pool on a countertop. You'll notice that the water stays together in the pool, rather than flattening out across the countertop. (This happens because of cohesion and surface tension.) Now gently dip the corner of a paper towel in the pool of water. The water adheres to the paper and "climbs" up the paper towel. This is called capillary action.

Materials
??? ? Water
??? ? Measuring cup
??? ? Glass cup or vase
??? ? Blue or red food color
??? ? Several white carnations (at least three). Tip: Fresher flowers work better than older ones
??? ? Knife
??? ? Camera (optional)

Preparation
??? ? Measure a half cup of water and pour it into the glass or vase.
??? ? Add 20 drops of food color to the water in the glass.
??? ? With the help of an adult, use a knife to cut the bottom stem tips of several (at least three) white carnations at a 45-degree angle. Tip: Be sure not to use scissors, they will crush the stems, reducing their ability to absorb water. Also, shorter stems work better than longer ones.
??? ? Place the carnations in the dyed water. As you do this, use the stems of the carnations to stir the water until the dye has fully dissolved.

Procedure
??? ? Observe the flowers immediately after you put them in the water. If you have a camera, take a picture of the flowers.
??? ? Observe the flowers two, four, 24, 48 and 72 hours after you put them in the dyed water. Be sure to also observe their stems, especially the bumps where the leaves branch from the stem and it is lighter green (it may be easier to see the dye here). If you have a camera, take pictures of the flowers and stems at these time points.
??? ? How did the flowers look after two hours? What about after four, 24, 48 and 72 hours? How did their appearance change over this time period?
??? ? What does the flowers' change in appearance tell you about how water moves through them?
??? ? Extra: In this activity, you used carnations, but do you think you'd see the same results with other flowers and plants? Try this activity with another white flower? a daisy, for instance?or a plant that is mostly stem, such as a stalk of celery.
??? ? Extra: Try doing this activity again but use higher or lower concentrations of food color, such as one half, twice, four times or 10 times as much; be sure to mix each dye amount with the same amount of water. What happens if you increase or decrease the concentration of food color in the water?
??? ? Extra: How would you make a multicolor carnation? Tip: You could try (1) leaving the flower for a day in one color of water and then putting it in another color of water for a second day or (2) splitting the end of the stem in two and immersing each half in a different color of water.

Blood type may influence heart disease risk

ScienceDaily (Aug. 9, 2012) ? People with blood type A, B, or AB had a higher risk for coronary heart disease when compared to those with blood type O, according to new research published in Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis and Vascular Biology, an American Heart Association journal.

People in this study with the rarest blood type -- AB, found in about 7 percent of the U.S. population -- had the highest increased heart disease risk at 23 percent. Those with type B had an 11 percent increased risk, and those with type A had a 5 percent increased risk. About 43 percent of Americans have type O blood.

"While people cannot change their blood type, our findings may help physicians better understand who is at risk for developing heart disease," said Lu Qi, M.D., Ph.D., the study's senior author and an assistant professor in the Department of Nutrition at the Harvard School of Public Health in Boston.

Knowing your blood type can be an important part of staying healthy and avoiding heart disease, Qi said. "It's good to know your blood type the same way you should know your cholesterol or blood pressure numbers," he said. "If you know you're at higher risk, you can reduce the risk by adopting a healthier lifestyle, such as eating right, exercising and not smoking."

The findings are based on an analysis of two large, well-known U.S. studies -- 62,073 women from the Nurses' Health Study and 27,428 adults from the Health Professionals Follow-up Study. Participants were between ages 30 and 75, and both groups were followed for 20 years or more.

Researchers also considered the study participants' diet, age, body mass index, gender, race, smoking status, menopause status and medical history. Researchers noted that the percentages of different blood types seen among the men and women enrolled in the two studies reflected levels seen in the general population.

The study did not evaluate the biological processes behind blood type and heart disease risk.

"Blood type is very complicated, so there could be multiple mechanisms at play," Qi said.

However, there is evidence suggesting that type A is associated with higher levels of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, the waxy substance that can clog arteries, and type AB is linked to inflammation, which may affect the function of the blood vessels. Also, a substance that plays a favorable role in blood flow and clotting may be higher in people with type O blood.

Understanding blood type could help healthcare providers better tailor treatments, Qi suggested. For example, a patient with type A blood may best lower heart disease risk by decreasing cholesterol intake.

The study group was predominantly Caucasian, and it's not clear whether these findings would translate to other ethnic groups. Environment also contributes to risk, Qi said.

"It would be interesting to study whether people with different blood types respond differently to lifestyle intervention, such as diet," Qi said, noting that further analysis is needed.

(AP) ? The Syrian prime minister who defected said Tuesday that Bashar Assad's regime was near collapse and urged other leaders to tip the scales and join the rebel side. The U.N. said an estimated 2.5 million Syrians have been injured, displaced or face problems securing food or other necessities, a sharp rise from about 1 million three months ago.

It was the first public statement by Riad Hijab since he left his post and fled to Jordan with his family last week. Hijab is the highest-ranking political figure to defect from Assad's regime.

"The regime is on the verge of collapse morally and economically in addition to cracks in the military," Hijab told a news conference in the Jordanian capital, Amman.

Hijab is a Sunni Muslim from the eastern province of Deir el-Zour where rebels claimed to have shot down a regime MiG-23 warplane on Monday. Hijab, who was not part of Assad's inner circle, said the trip to Jordan lasted three days during which he was protected by rebels of the Free Syrian Army.

He said he felt "pain in his soul" over the regime's shelling and other attacks on rebel strongholds as the government stepped up its military offensive. Activists say more than 20,000 people been killed in the struggle since March 2011.

"I was powerless to stop the injustice," Hijab said, speaking in front of the rebel flag. He called on "honorable leaders" in Syria to defect as well.

"Syria is full of honorable officials and military leaders who are waiting for the chance to join the revolution," he said, adding that Assad's forces only control 30 percent of Syria.

"I urge the army to follow the example of Egypt's and Tunisia's armies ? take the side of the people," he added.

Hijab said he was now backing the rebels, but gave no clue on his plans. There had been speculation that he would travel to the Gulf nation of Qatar, which is one of the rebels' main supporters.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said at least 45 people, including 29 civilians, were killed in Tuesday throughout Syria while the Local Coordination Committees, another activist group, said 50 people lost their lives. The Observatory said six members of the same family, including two children, were killed when troops shelled the eastern village of Shumaita.

In Geneva, the U.N. said that its humanitarian chief has begun talks in Syria on a mission to boost international aid inside the war-battered country. Valerie Amos was to meet with Syria's foreign ministry and the Red Crescent, which has been the pipeline for humanitarian supplies to Syrians caught in the civil war.

Jens Laerke, a spokesman for the U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs in Geneva, said Amos is on a three-day visit to the region.

She said the U.N. now estimates that more than 2 million Syrians have been injured, displaced or facing problems securing food or other necessities. Also, more than 200,000 refugees have fled to neighboring countries including Turkey, Lebanon and Jordan.

"We have a situation where there is an ongoing humanitarian crisis," Amos said in Damascus after meeting National Reconciliation Minister Ali Haidar. "Three months ago, we thought that there were about a million people who were in need of assistance. We're now having to revise that number to about 2.5 million," she added.

"I think it's important that all parties to the conflict recognize that it is ordinary men and women who are caught up in the middle of this and that it is important that the fighting stops," she added.

A spokesman for outgoing U.N. peace envoy Kofi Annan said that Syria authorities have backed former Algerian Foreign Minister Lakhdar Brahimi as his successor. The spokesman, Ahmed Fawzi, said the next step was for Brahimi, a longtime U.N. official, to formally accept the post and resume efforts for a diplomatic solution to Syria's crisis.

In Lebanon, the militant Hezbollah group denied Tuesday that a man captured in the Syrian capital of Damascus and shown in a video released by the rebels was one of its members.

The video is the latest incident to reflect rising sectarian divisions in Syria's vicious civil war, which has seen an increase in abductions of Shiite Muslims who many rebel fighters perceive as supporting Assad. The regime is dominated by members of Assad's Alawite minority sect, an offshoot of Shiite Islam. Sunnis, who are the majority in Syria, make up the backbone of the opposition.

The video purporting to show the captured Lebanese man followed another highly circulated rebel video Monday, showing the downing of the Syrian MiG and armed men later holding the captured pilot who ejected. Syria acknowledged a pilot had bailed out of a disabled plane but blamed the crash in Deir el-Zour on a technical malfunction.

In the video with the Lebanese captive, a man identifies himself as Hassane Salim al-Mikdad, and says he was one of 1,500 Hezbollah fighters sent to Syria on Aug. 3. The video was said to have been released by rebels and aired by Arab satellite TV Al-Arabiya on Tuesday.

"Most of those who entered were snipers," said the captive, whose face showed bruises as three masked gunmen stood behind him. A man, who could not be seen, was asking the hostage questions.

The captive then says that Hezbollah leader Sheik Hassan Nasrallah gathered the men before they headed to Syria and told them that they should go to "support the Shiite regime and the Shiite army against Sunni gangs." The authenticity of the video could not be independently confirmed.

Hezbollah, a Shiite Muslim group, is a key backer of Assad's regime. The Syrian opposition has repeatedly accused it of sending fighters to Syria, which Hezbollah denies.

Hezbollah issued a statement early Tuesday saying it "categorically denies that Mr. Hassane Salim al-Mikdad is one of its members."

There have been several attacks and abductions in Syria of Shiites from Lebanon, Iran and Iraq over the past months that were blamed on Syrian rebels. In May, Syrian rebels captured 11 Lebanese Shiites shortly after they crossed from Turkey on their way to Lebanon.

Earlier this month, 48 Iranians were captured by Syrian rebels near Damascus. Rebels claim the Iranians include members of Tehran's Revolutionary Guard and were on a "reconnaissance mission" in the Syrian capital. Iran insists the men were on a religious pilgrimage.

The Lebanese are apparently held to try to pressure the government in Beirut to show greater support for the Syrian rebels ? which is unlikely because of Hezbollah's strong influence and backing of Assad.

Also, many Iraqi Shiites, streaming back to their homeland in the past month to escape the conflict in Syria, reported a rash of attacks against their community, apparently by Sunni rebel gunmen. In July, 23 Iraqi Shiites were killed in Syria, some of them beheaded, according to the Washington-based Shiite Rights Watch. In one gruesome case, the U.N. said an Iraqi family of seven was killed at gunpoint in their Damascus apartment.

The motives for the attacks on Iraqis are unclear. They may be revenge against any Iraqi because the Shiite-led Iraqi government is seen as siding with Assad.

In other violence across Syria on Tuesday, activists reported clashes and shelling in the northern city of Aleppo, southern province of Daraa, suburbs of Damascus and the northwestern region of Idlib.

State-run Syrian TV said gunmen shot and killed Maamoun al-Zoebi, deputy director of the health ministry in the southern province of Daraa, as he was leaving work. The station said four gunmen shot him dead then took his car and drove away.

On Monday, gunmen abducted the correspondent of Iran's Arabic-language TV al-Alam in the central city of Homs Ahmad Sattouf, his wife told The Associated Press. She said he was taken from his office and his whereabouts are unknown.

Sattouf becomes the third journalist to be abducted in Syria over the past three days. Three other journalists were killed over the weekend in Damascus and its suburbs.

State-run news agency SANA said one of its reporters was wounded Monday while covering clashes in Aleppo.
