Video: Shooting at elementary school leaves over 20 dead

Beyond picky eaters: When your kid is too thin

At barely 25 pounds, 3-year-old Weston Carmann is about the size of an average 20-month-old. Like 3.5 percent of U.S. kids, he?s underweight, a barely recognized condition in a nation where two-thirds of children and teens are overweight or obese. But kids who are too thin are just as much of a worry, their parents say.

Marian Chertow named president of International Society for

For Marian Chertow, one person?s trash is another?s raw material. She is fond of asking, ?Why waste?waste??

An associate professor of industrial environmental management at the School of Forestry & Environmental Studies (F&ES), Chertow has been named president of the International Society for Industrial Ecology and will begin serving a two-year term in January. Founded in 2001, the society has over 500 members from 41 countries.

An emerging field of study, industrial ecology may sound like an oxymoron, but it is an intuitive call for more creative approaches to resource management, she says. It views urban landscapes much like scientists view natural ecosystems.

?It is a funny use of two words,? comments Chertow. ?We often think of industry in opposition to ecology.?

She explains that the flow of materials, water and energy through a manmade system is much the same as a biologist or zoologist tracing the life cycle of plants and animals through an ecosystem. In her research, Chertow focuses on the urban "jungle." She traces the pathways of steam and sludge through smokestacks and drainage pipes to ask whether output by one industrial process may, in fact, be valuable input for another.

Simply put, if society doesn?t have the resources, it won?t be able to produce the goods and services that people rely on. That ethos permeates the course, ?Corporate Environmental Management and Strategy,? which she teaches at F&ES and the Yale School of Management, where she obtained a master?s degree in public and private management in 1981. She went on to receive a Ph.D. from Yale and has published in a raft of technical journals. Her paper, ?Industrial Symbiosis Literature and Taxonomy,? published in the?Annual Review of Energy and the Environment, is cited globally and has helped establish the study of resource sharing.

Chertow traces her interest in industrial ecology to her days in college when a friend?s father ran a startup recycling company in Connecticut. She became a waste expert or, as the?New Haven Advocate?called her, a ?garbage guru? while head of the state authority responsible for resource recovery, where she spearheaded the construction of a billion dollars-worth of waste management infrastructure throughout the state.

?Once you start looking at the waste stream, you must look at the entire system that produced the waste in the first place,? says Chertow. ?That?s the notion of life cycle analysis, examining a system from production to waste. That?s what industrial ecology does.?

Since 1991 she has been director of the Industrial Environmental Management Program, and her teaching and research focus on industrial ecology, environmental technology innovation, and business and the environment. ?

She led a multiyear effort to consider future directions for environmental policy, resulting in "Thinking Ecologically: The Next Generation of Environmental Policy," edited with Daniel Esty and published by Yale University Press in 1997. She has testified on waste, recycling, and other environmental issues before committees of the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives, and was on the founding faculty of a new environmental master?s degree at the National University of Singapore where she still teaches every year.

The International Society for Industrial Ecology is composed of natural and social scientists, engineers, policymakers, and practitioners who promote the practice of industrial ecology in research, education, industrial policy and community development in order to promote a sustainable economy. As president, Chertow will also be an?ex officio?member of the management board of the international?Journal of Industrial Ecology, the official journal of the scholarly society.

NASA prepares twin spacecraft for crash landing

Ebb and Flow, two spacecraft that have been investigating the moon's gravitational field, will end their existence by smashing into the moon's north pole next week. The event is not likely to be visible from Earth, but the?Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter?may catch a glimpse. ? ?

Just don't expect to see celestial fireworks. Next week's impact near the moon's north pole by the washing machine-sized spacecraft won't carve a gaping crater or kick up a lot of debris. And it'll be dark when it happens.

"We are not expecting a big flash or a big explosion" that will be visible from Earth, said mission chief scientist Maria Zuber of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Still, it'll mark a violent end to a successful mission that has produced the most high-resolution gravity maps of Earth's closest neighbor. On Friday, engineers will turn off the science instruments in preparation for Monday's finale.

Previous unmanned trips to the moon have studied its lumpy gravitational field, but Ebb and Flow are the first ones dedicated to this goal. Since entering orbit over New Year's weekend, the formation-flying spacecraft have peered past the craggy surface into the interior.

Initially, the spacecraft flew about 35 miles (56 kilometers) above the surface and later dropped down to 14 miles (22 kilometers). About an hour before Monday's impact, they will fire their engines until they run out of fuel and slam at 3,800 mph (6,115 kph) into a predetermined target ? a mountain near the north pole that's far away from the Apollo landing sites.

Ebb will hit first followed by Flow 20 seconds later. Though the drama won't be visible from Earth, the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter will fly over the crash site afterward and attempt to spot them.

The last time?NASA?aimed at the moon was in 2009. The world watched through telescopes and over the Internet as a spacecraft and its booster rocket smashed into a permanently shadowed crater ? a one-two punch that fizzled when spectators saw little more than a fuzzy white flash.

The mission's end will also mark the close of a student campaign that used cameras aboard the spacecraft to image lunar targets including on the moon's far side. The MoonKAM project was spearheaded by a science education company founded by Sally Ride, the first American woman in space. Ride died of pancreatic cancer in July at age 61.

Even after Ebb and Flow complete their mission, scientists will continue to pore over the bounty of data they collected.

Among their findings so far: The moon is more beat up than previously imagined. The crust is much thinner than thought. And there's no evidence that Earth once had two moons that collided to form the one we see in the night sky.

Water-Saving Showerhead Pumps Every Drop Full Of Air

Your typical water saving showerhead manages to reduce the flow by simply using smaller holes. But the downside is that those eco alternatives don't provide quite the same showering experience. So a Japanese company has developed a brilliant alternative that aerates the water so a reduced flow still feels like an indulgent deluge. More »

Barbara Walters? 10 Most-Fascinating People (Video)

Last night Barbara Walter’s 10 Most Fascinating People of 2012 were revealed.? It was quite an hour and half of television, with some pretty freaking awesome interviews and the revelation of who was in fact the most fascinating person of 2012. It is an annual list and special put on by ABC and Barbara each year that basically high-lights the most talked about and influential people of the year. 2012 was one heck of a year and I don’t know how they chose who made the list but none the less the ten people have been revealed. Before I get into my thoughts on this let me share with you those who made the coveted list. General David Petraeus Ben Affleck ? ? ?? Hillary Clinton E L James Honey Boo Boo Prince Harry Gabby Douglas Chris Christie Seth MacFarlane One Direction If you watched the special you know that she interviewed everyone except Honey Boo Boo and Prince Harry. General Petraeus may have been the most fascinating of the year but it was her interview with New Jersey Governor Chris Christie that really impressed the masses. Airline's workers threaten no smiles, no booze

8 hrs.

Flight attendants at Hong Kong airline Cathay Pacific Airways are threatening to withhold food, alcohol and even smiles from passengers during the Christmas holidays over a pay dispute, a union official said Thursday.

Cabin staff at the airline, which has a reputation for top-notch service, voted at a union meeting this week in favor of industrial action that could also result in flight delays.

The union is demanding a 5 percent pay increase but the airline, which is struggling to cut costs after posting a first-half loss of 935 million Hong Kong dollars ($120.5 million), has offered 2 percent and a 13th month bonus.

The Cathay Pacific Airways Flight Attendants Union will soon announce when the action approved in the vote will be carried out, General Secretary Tsang Kwok-fung said.

"We may not provide alcoholic drinks to our passengers, or we may not even provide meals to passengers," in which case the union would advise travelers to bring their own food and drinks, said Tsang.

Limited service could also include withholding smiles and greetings from passengers.

"We cannot smile because of the situation, because of how the company treats us," Tsang said.

The union is also considering working to rule, which involves doing no more than the minimum work required in contracts and precisely following safety regulations. Such tactics could include strictly enforcing size limits on hand luggage or waiting for all cleaning staff to leave the plane before boarding. The measures could delay flights by 20 to 30 minutes, Tsang said.

Some 1,600 of the union's nearly 6,000 members voted on Monday for industrial action after negotiations with the airline broke down.

The union is also considering a strike as a last resort, but not until the new year.

Cathay took out ads in Hong Kong newspapers on Thursday saying it's waiting to hear back from the union on an invitation to hold further talks. "We fully understand how important it is not to disrupt passengers at this busy time," the airline said.

The airline has "comprehensive contingency plans" to ensure normal operations over the holidays, Chief Operating Officer Ivan Chu said at a press briefing. He wouldn't give details.?

Like 9/11 concert, musicians turn out for Sandy

NEW YORK (AP) ? Call the "12-12-12" benefit show "The Concert for New York City" 2.0. Eleven years after the benefit concert in response to the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks was held at Madison Square Garden, many of the same top musicians came together to raise money for those suffering from Superstorm Sandy, including Paul McCartney, The Rolling Stones, Billy Joel, The Who, Eric Clapton and Bon Jovi.

Those singers set a serious tone Wednesday night, wearing mostly black and gray onstage as they encouraged people to call and donate money to those affected by the devastating storm that took place in late October, killing about 140 people and damaging millions of homes and properties in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and other areas.

Alicia Keys, who grew up in Manhattan's Hell's Kitchen, closed the night with her New York anthem "Empire State of Mind," as doctors, nurses, firefighters, police officers and others joined the piano-playing singer onstage. They ended the night chanting "U.S.A."

Keys was one of two women who performed at "The Concert for Sandy Relief." Diana Krall backed McCartney, who sang his solo songs, Beatles songs and played the role of Kurt Cobain with Nirvana members Dave Grohl, Krist Novoselic and Pat Smear during the nearly six-hour show.

Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band kicked off the night, performing songs like "My City of Ruins," ''Born to Run" with Bon Jovi and some of Tom Waits' "Jersey Girl."

"I pray that that characteristic remains along the Jersey shore because that's what makes it special," the New Jersey-born rocker said.

E Street band guitarist Steven Van Zandt said backstage that musicians and entertainers always show up when tragedy hits.

"It's more personal because literally the Jersey Shore is where we grew up ... but we'd be here anyway," he said. "You don't see oil companies here, you don't see insurance companies here, the Wall Street guys, with all due respect, they're not waiting in line to help anybody, so we're here."

The sold-out show was televised live, streamed online, played on the radio and shown in theaters all over the world. Producers said up to 2 billion people were able to experience it live.

But the night wasn't all serious: Comedy helped break up the weightiness of Sandy's devastation, including jokes from Jon Stewart, Chris Rock, Stephen Colbert and Adam Sandler, who performed a hilarious parody of Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah." Even Coldplay's Chris Martin brought on the jokes.

"I know you really wanted One Direction," Martin said of the popular British boy band. "But it's way past their bedtime."

Martin was joined onstage by Michael Stipe, as they sang R.E.M.'s "Losing My Religion." And there was another collaboration with Roger Waters and Eddie Vedder on "Comfortably Numb."

The participants, many natives of the area and others who know it well, struck a defiant tone in asking for help to rebuild sections of the New York metropolitan area devastated by the storm. About half of the performers were British.

"This has got to be the largest collection of old English musicians ever assembled in Madison Square Garden," said Mick Jagger of The Rolling Stones, who performed two songs. "If it rains in London, you've got to come and help us."

Waters, who has lived in New York for 11 years, said "there's a great feeling of camaraderie" backstage and that he's excited he could help those who are suffering.

Richie Sambora said he "had to hold back tears" when he visited New Jersey and saw the devastation. "My mom's house (in Point Pleasant, N.J.) got trashed. They had to evacuate her. She's living with me until we fix it up."

Most of the acts performed about four tunes. McCartney performed for 40 minutes and The Who were onstage for 30. They weaved Sandy into their set, showing pictures of storm devastation on video screens during "Pinball Wizard." Pete Townshend made a quick revision to the lyrics of "Baba O'Riley," changing "teenage wasteland" to "Sandy wasteland."

Joel performed one of the last century's favorites, "New York State of Mind." Joel's "Miami 2017 (Seen the Lights Go Out on Broadway)" sounded prescient, with new Sandy-fueled lyrics smoothly fitting in. He was also the only artist to mark the season, working in a little of "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas."

Kanye West's performance gave the crowd a different sound, as the music lineup was heavily weighted toward classic rock, which has the type of fans able to afford a show for which ticket prices ranged from $150 to $2,500. Even with those prices, people with tickets have been offering them for more on broker sites such as StubHub, an attempt at profiteering that producers fumed was "despicable."

Proceeds will go to the Robin Hood Foundation, which said it raised $30 million from ticket sales and sponsors ahead of the concert. The organization also stressed that the earnings will get to those who need assistance.

"We will make sure that that money goes out right away to the most affected (places) in New York City, New Jersey, Long Island, Connecticut," David Saltzman, the organization's executive director, said backstage. "The money that we raised from this concert will be distributed in the days, weeks and months, not years."

Robin Hood is working through existing organizations that "know what to do and know their communities," he said. Saltzman added that Fuse TV, which is owned by Madison Square Garden, was giving its YouTube revenues earned from airing the concert to the victims, and that StubHub has donated $860,000 from fees from those selling tickets.

The sold-out "12-12-12" concert was being shown on 37 television stations in the United States and more than 200 others worldwide. It was to be streamed on 30 websites, including YouTube and Yahoo. The theaters showing it included 27 in the New York region.

Age not factor in immunity to viruses, researchers find

Dec. 13, 2012 ? Our immune system does not shut down with age, says a new study led by McMaster University researchers.

A study published in PLOS Pathogens today shows a specialized class of immune cells, known as T cells, can respond to virus infections in an older person with the same vigour as T cells from a young person.

"For a long time, it was thought the elderly were at a higher risk of infections because they lacked these immune cells, but that simply isn't the case," said Jonathan Bramson, the study's principal investigator. "The elderly are certainly capable of developing immunity to viruses."

Researchers at McMaster, University of Toronto and the University of Pennsylvania examined individuals, younger than 40, between 41 to 59 years of age and older than 60, infected with three different viruses, including West Nile, and found the older group demonstrated perfectly normal immune responses.

Both the number of virus-fighting T cells and the functionality of the T cells were equivalent in all three groups.

"So as we age, our bodies are still able to respond to new viruses, while keeping us immune to viruses we've been exposed to in the past," Bramson said.

He added that these results have important implications for vaccination of elderly individuals.

Currently, vaccines for the elderly aren't designed to elicit responses from these immune cells, and this might explain the lack of effective protection from the flu vaccine, he said.

Vaccines specifically designed to generate T-cell immunity may be more effective at protecting older adults, Bramson said.

The research was funded by the Canadian Institutes for Health Research and the U.S. National Institutes of Health. PLOS Pathogens is an open-access, peer-reviewed journal of the Public Library of Science.

What Did Kids Read Before Hans Christian Andersen?

A 1914 illustration of 'Thumbelina' from an English translation of Hans Christian Anderson's tales.

A 1914 illustration of "Thumbelina" from an English translation of Hans Christian Anderson's tales

Courtesy Wikimedia Commons.

Danish historian Esben Brage has discovered a previously unknown story written by Hans Christian Andersen, the 19th-century author responsible for such children's classics as "The Little Mermaid," "The Emperor's New Clothes," and "The Princess and the Pea." Kids still read Andersen's oeuvre, but very few pre-Andersen children's stories remain popular. What did children read before the era of Hans Christian Andersen?

Epic poems, religious literature, romances, and Aesop. Scholars argue over when children's literature?that is, books written exclusively for and read exclusively by children?came into existence. But it's largely a debate over definitions. Even in ancient times, certain types of stories were considered appropriate for children. Archaeologists have unearthed a children's version of the labors of Hercules from the third century written in simple language with large, spaced-out text and color pictures of the lions and the mythical hero. Greek and Roman teachers selected passages from Homer or Virgil that were learner-friendly. And there was always Aesop, the (possibly fictitious) freed slave who supposedly composed fables to illustrate a moral or ethical message. He didn't write his works down, and we'll never know whether children were his intended audience. We do know, however, that Aesop's fables were a crucial part of the education of a Greek or Roman child. Such eminent writers as Plato and Aristophanes referenced Aesop, obviously expecting that their audiences would have come across the fables during their formative years.

The Middle Ages weren't a particularly fruitful time for kiddie lit. In Europe, the Christian majority adjusted pagan fables to give them a Christian bent. The moral statements that ended many of Aesop's fables, for example, came to include commands from God, and some of the relationships in the stories were altered to make them resemble biblical stories like Cain and Abel or the prodigal son. The fables of Avianus were read to children as well, and scholars have found versions with childlike scribblings in the margins. Medieval children also read the Psalms and the Lives of the Saints?not exactly kids' fare, as we think of it today.

The printing press was as much of a boon to young readers as it was to adults. When the press came to England in the 15th century, some of the first books published were read by younger audiences. In addition to Aesop's fables, which were still going strong, English children read the tales of Reynard, a talking red fox that delighted his fans by outsmarting the wealthy and powerful. English kids also read adventure books, particularly the stories of Guy of Warwick, who battled dragons and other beasts, and medieval knight Sir Gowther.

It's still not clear, however, whether characters like Reynard were truly for children. Adults also read the stories, and no one knows whether the people who dreamed up the tales had kids in mind. Children's literature?that is, books printed specifically for children or for parents to read to children?may not have existed in English until the 1740s, when John Newbery launched his publishing business. A Little Pretty Pocket Book, which, according to some, was the first true piece of dedicated children's literature, was an enormous success. It had poems and songs and even came with a ball or pin cushion. (Newbery was ahead of his time in marketing as well as in children's publishing.) Still, Hans Christian Andersen?whom contemporaries described as having the attitude of a young child throughout his life?was part of a golden age of children's literature that has yet to be matched.

Cosmetic Surgery for Men of Middle-age

Plastic surgery for men of middle age is now pretty routine in modern society. Today?s over 40s male is so obsessed with preserving his youthful good looks that Botox, fillers, implants, and various other nips and tucks, have become part of the accepted banter at local watering holes.

Man in need of Cosmetic SurgeryNot everyone is Impressed!

Most wives and girlfriends of these guys don?t seem to appreciate their men having cosmetic surgery, face-lifts in particular. They think facial renovation leaves their partners looking more like power-lesbians, or failed drag queens, than younger versions of themselves. It?s an appearance, they say, that can be a huge turn off.

?Honey, you used to look your age. Now you don?t even look your species!? ~ Greg Giraldo

Is this a Man?s Mid-knife Crisis

Men of a certain age have always been ridiculed for having a midlife crisis of sorts. Outward signs of this would manifest in childlike behaviours, a younger wardrobe, an obsession with health & fitness, hanging out in younger venues, and the acquirement of a shiny new sports car, complete with a much younger women for those able to do so.

It appears the male midlife crisis has evolved into a kind of mid-knife crisis. Reports have shown that almost one third of men in the throes of middle age are bypassing red sports cars, smart leather jackets, and whatnot, for surgical and non-surgical cosmetic procedures.

What is the Most Popular Plastic Surgery for Men?

There are basically 2 types of cosmetic surgery; invasive (under the knife), and minimally or non-evasive procedures . Below is a shortlist of the most popular cosmetic processes for middle-aged men at the time of writing.

Top 3 Minimally Non-invasive Procedures:

  1. Botox,
  2. Microdermabrasion.
  3. Laser hair removal

Top 6 Invasive Procedures for Men include

  1. Full neck and face-lift
  2. Nose reshaping (rhinoplasty)
  3. Eyelid surgery
  4. Ear pinning
  5. Liposuction
  6. Male breast reduction

It?s important to point out here that not all cosmetic surgery is done for reasons of vanity. Most of it is, but not all, as we?ve outlined below:

Unfortunate Features

Some men have what you might call ?unfortunately features? that need correcting if they are to feel better about themselves as people. Unsightly birthmarks, a hideous looking nose, or large ears that stick right out, are 3 such examples where plastic surgery can help.

Accident or Illness

There are men that become disfigured or maimed in some way because of accidents or illness. Plastic surgery can be useful here in helping them cope and recover from such events.

The Race for Jobs

Due to so much latent ageism going on in the employment markets these days, a growing number of men are having cosmetic surgery for no other reason than to help them compete with younger applicants.? Unfortunately, youthfulness has a definite advantage.

How much does Cosmetic Surgery Cost for Men?

Dollar symbolAlthough men and women share some of the same nips and tucks as each other, there are certain procedures that are unique, or more commonly carried out by each gender.

So just how much does plastic surgery cost for men? Well, actually that?s an impossible question to answer.

There are many factors to consider when pricing up procedures, particularly facial enhancements.

So it?s difficult to generalise because your size, age, procedure (obviously), the surgeon, and the region or county, all play a significant role in the determining the fees.

Go to Thailand for Cosmetic Surgery

Thai katoeyIn recent years, Thailand has become somewhat of a hub for medical tourism, and that includes cosmetic surgery. The country?s doctors are said to have advanced medical knowledge in all the newest technology and procedures.

Thai plastic surgeons enjoy a fantastic reputation. They adopt the latest sophisticated techniques, and are renowned for their artistic mastery in the theatre.

It?s not surprising when you think about it.? Both Thai men and Thai women are incredibly vain by nature, and those that can afford it, give the surgeons plenty to practice on, especially the famous ladyboys, aka the third sex. Ladyboys, it seems, spend half of their youth going under the knife as they transform from femboy to ladyboy to katoey, and beautiful they become too.

Summary

The visible signs of ageing never used to bother men the way it does today. Even if the technology and cash was available a couple of generations ago, it?s highly unlikely that the dads and granddads of yesteryear would have bothered with any of it.

Middle-aged men in the twenty-first century are not as rough and rugged as they once were. They are so much more in touch with their feminine side ? something welcomed by the majority of modem women. Whether this is a good or bad thing remains to be seen, but the softer, gentler male is no longer confined to the characteristics of gay men as it once was.

Obviously no middle-aged western guys can ever acquire the gorgeous soft lines of a Thai ladyboy, or Asian femboy, but they will continue to strive for as much boyishness as they surgeon?s knife can cut out of them, and there?s nothing wrong with that, is there?

News in brief: Fins to limbs with flip of genetic switch

Boost of gene activity may help explain how arms and legs evolved

By Tina Hesman Saey

Web edition: December 12, 2012

LOOK MA, HANDS

Throwing a simple genetic switch was enough to turn one of this zebra fish embryo?s fins into a primitive limb with a bulge where a future hand or foot might have grown.

Credit: Freitas et al/Developmental Cell 2012

Evolving limbs from fins may be as easy as taking the activity of a few genes and kicking it up a notch, a new study suggests.

Many evolutionary biologists have thought that four-limbed creatures evolved from finned ancestors. Forming limbs involves turning on body patterning genes in two precisely timed phases, first in the back legs and then, later, in the part of the limb that will become the hand or foot. Fish have those genes but turn them on only once, or at very low levels during the second phase.

Working with zebra fish, researchers in Spain added a genetic switch called an enhancer to turn up activity of a gene called Hoxd13 at the tips of developing fins. Fish usually lack these genetic switches, but adding them and making more Hoxd13 than usual produced rudimentary limbs that had more cartilage and less fin material, the researchers report in the Dec. 11 Developmental Cell. Ancestors of four-legged creatures may have acquired these enhancers, leading to limb development.

Another part of that success is writing short, sweet, and succinct advertisements that will appeal to the people you?re trying to reach. In point #5 of that article linked above, we talked about the importance of writing a great pay per click ad.

It also has to start things off right, piquing their interest so that they could be receptive to whatever it is you?re trying to accomplish on the page you direct them to. Because the web is filled with advertisements, a lot of people tend to be oblivious to them. Our eyes have gotten really good at scanning quickly to weed out the rubbish.

Advertisers need to work harder to get our attention. Remember this in your PPC ad writing efforts and you?ll increase your chances of writing ads that people actually click.

There are many ways to appeal to people, such as:

  • Writing catchy headlines
  • Making an irresistible offer of something
  • Using current events to get their attention
  • Appealing to them with celebrity interest
  • And so on?

Catchy Headlines

A catchy headline grabs someone?s attention. It can be funny, shocking, hard to believe? Whatever it is, it needs to compete with a lot of other words and phrases on the page and the right headline could be what gets people to click your advertisement over the other options on the page from organic and other paid advertisements.

Note: Be careful to deliver on your headline or you?ll have wasted money on that ad!

An Irresistible Offer

A great way to get someone?s attention is to make them believe that there?s something in it for them if they click. A freebie, some important info that will benefit them, etc. People want to save time, make money, learn things, get things for free or on sale, etc.

If your ad appeals to the bargain hunter or the person who want the next ?greatest thing?, then you could drive interested buyers to your landing page where you?ll have a chance to woo them into buying from you.

Current Events

Many pay per click advertisements appeal to current events because that?s something that will often get people?s attention. This can be great for social media advertising, such as Facebook.

For example, if you?re selling sports memorabilia in the middle of a playoff season, you can use this to advantage with your Google Adwords ad or Facebook advertising language. If there?s a big current event or news item that has people talking, they will gravitate toward advertisements that relate to that topic.

Note: Keep in mind that you?ll have to be on top of your campaign in this case so that you?re not paying for ads that are no longer current.

Celebrities

You need to be careful not to open yourself up to a lawsuit or something like that with this one but some people capitalize on the fact that people in their target demographic can be celebrity obsessed. You?ll probably see things like, ?As recommended by Dr. Oz? or ?This is one of Oprah?s favorite things? or ?Get lips like Angelina?. If you do this the right way, you can pique interest without subjecting yourself to a lawsuit.

A Major Challenge with Pay Per Click Advertising

Google pay per click ads allow a very small amount of space. You?ve got a tiny little bit of space to grab someone?s attention, squeeze your keywords in, and to do it without violating terms of service. The right mix an increase your Google quality score. The wrong mix will either get rejected by Google or other advertising programs or will get approved but won?t do much for you.

Google Adwords Character Limits

A basic Google Adwords ad allows 25 characters on the headline, 35 characters on the second line, and 35 characters on the third line. This includes spaces. As you can see, you?ll need to be succinct. Think of the 25 character headline as the attention getter and with the second and third line you?ll have a chance to convince someone to click to get to your page. (You can make lines 2 and 3 share one sentence, if you like). After that, people will see your URL.

Example:

pay per click ad writing tips

The only way around these character limits is if you do a graphic ad that?s larger and that contains your text. These tend to be more expensive, of course.

Additional tips:

  • Ask a question in your headline and provide info about the fact that people can get an answer by clicking. A common template includes a headline, some persuasion, and a call to action.
  • Use an offer-based ad that tells people what they will get when they arrive on your site.
  • Create urgency so they will want to click now.
  • Think about the context of what people will be searching for based on your keywords.
  • Do your best to make sure the landing page you direct your traffic to is creative and interesting. Don?t forget to add some sort of opt-in to your landing page so that you can capture someone?s permission to market to them in the future.
  • Remember that every ad you create will have the ability to boost the credibility of your company or, if handled poorly, could lower the chances of someone wanting to buy from you.

California governor treated for early-stage prostate cancer

SACRAMENTO (Reuters) - California Governor Jerry Brown is undergoing treatment for early-stage prostate cancer with an excellent prognosis for recovery, and the 74-year-old Democrat is expected to keep up a full work schedule, his office said on Wednesday.

"Fortunately, this is early-stage localized prostate cancer, which is being treated with a short course of conventional radiotherapy," Dr. Eric Small, Brown's oncologist, said in a statement.

"The prognosis is excellent, and there are not expected to be any significant side effects," he added. Small is the co-director of the urology program at the University of California, San Francisco Medical Center.

The announcement came as California lawmakers prepare for a 2013 legislative session that will kick off a historic year in which Democrats have supermajority control of both houses - the first time any party has had such a grip on the Legislature in 79 years.

Brown, who had a cancerous growth removed from the right side of his nose in April 2011, will complete his treatment for prostate cancer in early January, around the same time the Legislature is due to convene, his office said.

He is expected to keep a full work schedule, it added.

Brown is riding a string of successes in recent months. Voters in November approved a tax hike he championed, while soundly rejecting a measure he opposed that would have gutted union political power.

He also oversaw approval of a high-speed rail project and has been reining in an unwieldy budget deficit that has plagued California in recent years.

AFFECTS ONE IN SIX MEN

Brown's office did not immediately respond to questions as to when the governor was diagnosed with prostate cancer, how long he had been undergoing treatment, or where he was being treated.

During Brown's outpatient cancer treatment in 2011, doctors removed basal carcinoma cells and did reconstructive surgery to his nose.

The California Democratic and Republican parties both wished the governor a speedy recovery. Also weighing in was a Twitter account set up for the governor's dog, a Welsh corgi named Sutter, that said the dog would take good care of his owner.

One in every six men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during his lifetime, according to the U.S. National Institutes of Health. It is the most common cause of cancer-related death for men over 75 years of age.

Brown became one of the youngest governors of California when he took office in 1975 at age 36, going on to serve two consecutive terms. He later returned to that office in 2011 and is now the oldest governor the state has ever had.

Brown faded from public view after two failed presidential runs, but resurrected his political career in 1998, transforming himself into a quirky, pragmatic mayor of Oakland.

After eight years in Oakland, Brown was elected California attorney general and held the post until he was elected governor again in 2010.

Twitter Takes a Shot at Instagram With Photo Filter Debut

Twitter raised the ante Tuesday in its competition with Instagram for the hearts and eyes of smartphone shutterbugs by introducing image filtering to its mobile applications for Android and iOS. The debut of the filter feature comes on the heels of moves by Facebook-owned Instagram to limit its members' ability to post their photos directly to Twitter.

Canadian bank stocks already reflect challenging environment ...

Since valuations of Canadian banks already reflect the challenging operating environment, their shares stand to make healthy gains in 2013 barring bouts of risk aversion or markets anticipating a recession.

That?s the view of Andre-Philippe Hardy, analyst at RBC Capital Markets, who believes the banks could generate total returns between 10% and 20% next year.

Mr. Hardy thinks returns will likely be at the low end of that range if the operating environment remains unchanged, and at the higher end with even modest improvement.

?We believe that a weaker housing market could negatively impact sentiment toward Canadian bank shares but a modestly weaker housing market (prices down 5-15%) on its own would not have a meaningful impact on bank profitability, in our view, beyond what is already expected (i.e., weaker loan growth and low but no longer improving credit costs),? the analyst said in a note to clients.

?We believe that Canadian employment growth is much more important to Canadian banks? domestic growth and profitability outlook than the housing market on its own,? he added.

Despite the group not having meaningful direct exposure to Europe?s most troubled countries, Mr. Hardy wouldn?t be surprised to see broader market volatility stemming from issues in Europe impacting the banks for some time.

?Signs of stress for European countries and banks have improved in recent months, but remain elevated,? he said.

The analyst?s favourite bank stocks are Toronto-Dominion Bank, Bank of Nova Scotia and Canadian Western Bank.

How To Decide If Space Tourists Are Fit To Fly

Astronaut Alan Shepard became the first American in space in 1961. He later developed an inner ear problem that grounded him from space flight until an operation cured him.

NASA

Astronaut Alan Shepard became the first American in space in 1961. He later developed an inner ear problem that grounded him from space flight until an operation cured him.

NASA

Childhood dreams of being an astronaut are easy. Actually blasting off is a little harder.

But now people who have longed to go into space can buy a ticket, if they've got the cash. Are they healthy enough to make the voyage, though?

That's becoming a pressing question as the options for leaving Earth multiply.

A company called Space Adventures has been sending tourists to the International Space Station since 2001. Virgin Galactic has already signed up more than 500 people to take trips to the edge of space. They'll start blasting off next year. And startup Golden Spike said earlier this month it plans to start sending people to the moon, perhaps as soon as 2020.

"If space tourism starts, everyone who can afford to will be able to fly," says S. Marlene Grenon, a vascular surgeon at the University of California, San Francisco. "That raises the question of how we can make it possible for anyone to fly into space if that's their dream."

With costs ranging from $200,000 to $750 million per flyer, space isn't likely to rival Disneyland for tourists anytime soon. But thousands of people could soon be headed up into space.

NASA's corps of astronauts are pretty fit to begin with. They're put through rigorous medical testing and can be disqualified for conditions ranging from kidney stones to cardiovascular problems. Space tourists and workers could be a less healthy lot.

"All that's required by the FAA is informed consent," Grenon says. "It's up to the operators to decide" who's fit to fly.

Depending on the rules that those operators institute, physicians could be faced with clearing their patients for flight. So Grenon gathered a group of aerospace medical professionals, including astronaut Millie Hughes-Fulford, to provide some advice. Their paper appears in the British Medical Journal.

Space travel, Grenon notes, is very different from life on earth. "Your body doesn't feel gravity," she says, and "the blood volume goes more towards the chest and the face. That's why astronauts have bird legs and puffy faces." Within a few days, space travelers could be experiencing motion sickness, nausea, sinus congestion or dizziness.

Back on the ground, they may suffer bone and muscle loss or kidney stones. They may have a weakened immune system and have a greater risk of infection.

Those risks are all known from extensive studies of the 500 or so people who have gone into space since Russian Yuri Gagarin orbited the planet in 1961. But people with all sorts of pre-existing conditions could soon be following Gagarin's path.

That doesn't mean, however, that any old medical condition should bar someone from space, Grenon and her colleagues say. Instead, a physician might help a patient with coronary artery disease to stabilize his blood pressure and heart rhythm . A pregnant woman would be advised to postpone her trip until after she gives birth.

Grenon recommends that doctors "optimize their medical treatment and make sure the risks are discussed and document those discussions."

Green Blog: Doctors Urge U.S. to Block Gas Export Terminals

More than 100 physicians urged the Obama administration on Thursday not to approve the construction of liquefied natural gas export terminals until more is known about the health effects of hydraulic fracturing, the drilling process that has opened the way for a big increase in domestic gas production.

A group called Physicians, Scientists and Engineers for Healthy Energy, which conducts research into unconventional natural gas production, organized a petition arguing that exports of natural gas would increase such domestic drilling, known as fracking, exposing more people to chemicals that might damage their health.

The petition, signed by 107 doctors, public health experts, environmental scientists, and academics, cited a growing number of anecdotal reports associating fracking with adverse health risks through human exposure to water, air and soil.

Despite reports that some people living near gas-drilling operations are suffering from respiratory, skin and gastrointestinal ailments, there is no established body of scientific evidence establishing whether fracking contaminates the local environment, the physicians noted.

Until policymakers and public health officials determine whether fracking is dangerous to human health, they argue, the government should not allow the development of the 15 new export terminals that have been proposed by the gas industry. The government has so far approved one export terminal, proposed by Cheniere Energy, in Louisiana.

?There is a paucity of objective, evidence-based epidemiological research,? Dr. Madelon Finkel, a professor of public health at Weill Cornell Medical College in New York City, said during a conference call with reporters.

The petition follows the publication on Dec. 4 of a government study concluding that the economic benefits of LNG exports would outweigh the impacts of the higher domestic prices that may result. The report has encouraged speculation that more projects will be approved.

The demand for exports has arisen from a recent boom in domestic production resulting from the use of fracking in combination with horizontal drilling, which has allowed the industry to exploit vast shale gas reserves at an affordable cost. Energy companies are also lured by sharply higher natural gas prices overseas.

The natural gas industry denies there is any link between fracking and environmental contamination, arguing that the chemicals used to help release gas from shale beds are injected into the ground through multiple layers of steel and concrete and released into the shale beneath thousands of feet of impervious rock.

Dan Whitten, a spokesman for America?s Natural Gas Alliance, dismissed the physicians? concerns.

?There is no basis in fact or science for the assertions made by this group,? Mr. Whitten said in a statement. ?Natural gas is produced safely and responsibly every day, and that production is governed by extensive federal, state and local regulations.?

But Dr. Adam Law, a physician at Cayuga Medical Center in Ithaca, N.Y., said that researchers are finding ?measurable? levels of pollutants from the gas industry in the air and water that are associated with the risk of illness, and that the first studies describing such exposure are entering the medical literature.

Seth Shonkoff, executive director of the physicians? group, said that a current investigation into fracking by the Environmental Protection Agency would not fully establish whether fracking is safe because it is concerned only with its effects on water.

The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the petition.

Childhood Obesity Statistics: Parental Stress Matters | Your Health ...

kidsAs parents, we all try to do our best to raise our children with the best of morals and the most ideal of health. No parent looks at their child and thinks, ?I love little junior, but I?m going to feed him McDonalds three times per week so he can grow obese and develop heart disease and diabetes.?

Rather, the effects on our kids are more subtle. Take cigarette smoking. We?re all aware of secondhand smoke and how much it interferes with our children?s health. But, if you are smoking parent, are you aware of third hand smoke? That residue that?s left behind on the furniture, your clothing and the dashboard that your child is still exposed to long after that cigarette is extinguished.

Other factors like BPA in plastic water bottles, too much TV / video game time, soda and artificial sweeteners are all on this list as well. All have been linked to weight gain in children.

What about stress? Sure?stress is bad for kids. Makes them lose sleep and raises cortisol levels.

What about stress? Sure?stress is bad for kids. Makes them lose sleep and raises cortisol levels. Of course stress could reasonably contribute to weight gain and poor health in our children. The transition from junior high to high school is considered one of the most stressful periods in an adolescent?s life.

Actually, I meant parental stress.

There is no doubt that we live in a society that is more stressed than ever. Work, financial and family stress seems to affect nearly everyone, and few manage it effectively. But you do a good job of hiding it from your child. Right?

I hear this quite frequently. But, as I always say, kids and dogs are far better at picking up on non-verbal cues than you could ever imagine.

womanWhich brings us to a research article in the November 1, 2012 edition of the journal Pediatrics. Parents were asked about the stressors in their lives as well as how stressed out they felt they were. The researchers then looked at the child?s risk of being obese and how frequently they took in fast food.

Here?s what they found:

? Children whose parents with a higher number of stressors were 12% more likely to be obese.

? Children whose parents have higher levels of perceived stress were 7% more likely to partake in fast food consumption.

These numbers are not dramatic, but there is no one cause-one cure when it comes to the childhood obesity epidemic. There is no doubt that we all need to spend a little time in retrospection and ask ourselves some hard questions when it comes to our children?s long term health.

For instance, maybe you can?t manage your stress right now, but you need to understand just how important it is to manage it for the long run, not just for you, but for the health of your child. At the least, if you do feel like you live in a state of life similar to Fairfield, CT residents during the heart of Hurricane Sandy, than do your best to make good decisions.

This means no fast food. Planned family meals around the table. Family exercise. Anything that can help to divert the toxic effects of stress that you may be passing on to your child.

Official: Syria fires Scud missiles at rebels

(AP) ? Syrian government forces have fired Scud missiles at insurgents in recent days, escalating the 2-year-old conflict against rebels seeking to overthrow the regime, U.S. officials said Wednesday.

Speaking on condition of anonymity, two officials said forces of President Bashar Assad have fired the missiles from the Damascus area into northern Syria. These officials asked not to be named because they weren't authorized to discuss the matter publicly.

News of the missiles came on the same day that more than 100 countries, including the United States, recognized a new Syrian opposition coalition. That has further isolated Assad's regime and opened a way for greater humanitarian assistance to the forces battling to oust him.

One official said there was no indication that chemical weapons were aboard the missiles. Officials have said over the past week that they feared rebel advances were prompting Assad to consider using chemical weapons.

This official estimated that the number of Scuds fired was more than a half dozen, confirming details first reported by The New York Times.

State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said Assad has fired missiles, but wouldn't specify what kind.

"As the regime becomes more and more desperate, we see it resorting to increased lethality and more vicious weapons moving forward and we have in recent days seen missiles deployed," she said.

White House press secretary Jay Carney, speaking to reporters, said he could not confirm the report, but said if true it would be a sign of desperation.

"The idea that the Syrian regime would launch missiles, within its borders, at its own people, is stunning, desperate and a completely disproportionate military escalation," Carney said.

The new development happened as officials planned an international conference to further assist opposition to Assad.

"This is the usual pattern of behavior that whenever there is an important decision that is anti-Assad taken by the international community, the Assad regime escalates the degree of violence to show its degree of displeasure," said Murhaf Jouejati, a specialist on Syrian affairs at the National Defense University. "Like saying, 'Oh, yeah? I'll show you!' "

Education system will be polarised if it fails to inculcate respect and understanding for each other ? Lau

KUCHING: Is our education system up to the mark?

Are our schools, colleges and universities inculcating the principles for inter-racial harmonious relations in our multi-racial society?

These were the questions posed by KTS Group managing director Dato Henry Lau at the KTS Education Forum yesterday.

?Each year, we are spending billions on education nationwide. After more than four decades of almost free education in primary and secondary schools, we are still baffled and unable to distinguish the differences between language and knowledge learning,? Lau noted.

He observed that the country?s education system suffered from political interferences, racial quota syndrome as well as other trivial and mundane preoccupations ? even in the higher learning institutions where innovation and intellectual freedom are the most fundamental essence of education.

Towards this, he cautioned speakers and participants at the forum that the discussion on education system should be limited to the discourse of knowledge as any intention to interfere it with politics or religion would further complicate an already complex issue.

?If the discussion on the education system could not maintain its pure objective, the role of education in contributing to the harmony and solidity of a society might be jeopardised.

?Education should be limited to knowledge and should not involve politics and religion. I hope the forum will turn it straight while we are exploring the issue of education in Malaysia. We should refrain from raising the issue of politics or religion or any other issues except education in its pure sense.?

Lau said the country?s malleable young should be taught to recognise the multi-cultural origins of the various ethnic groups, appreciate each other?s religion and show respect and understanding for one another.

?If our education system does not inculcate these attitudes in our students, it will only tend to polarise us. Getting a string of academic A?s is meaningless if the students fail to understand, appreciate and practice good moral values.?

Lau further warned: ?If we do not have an even and healthy development of our human capital, someday when and if our oil and gas supplies run out and our population increases, the real price we have to pay for the defects, if we do not correct them soon, will be painful and detrimental to our country.?

The Education Forum is part of the KTS 50th anniversary celebration themed We care, we grow.

A string of activities, centred around corporate social responsibility (CSR), has been organised throughout the year.

On CSR, Lau said it should be beyond cash donation and such like.

?In fact, helping to maintain a harmonious and stable society in our community is also part of CSR.

?KTS would like to play a part in education since education has become part and parcel of the development of a society. That?s why we have initiated the education forum,? he added.

The one-day forum titled ?Education in Malaysia: How Do We See It? The Sarawak Perspective? saw seven invited speakers presenting their insights on education to about 300 participants.

Lau expressed hope that the forum could help provide pertinent and salient answers to the all encompassing questions on education.

?I hope the forum can come out with a statement or paper which we can submit to the government. I know many have submitted but I hope we can do a better one,? he said.

Steam Community Market now in Beta for Team Fortress 2

The latest news from Valve is that the?Steam Community Market is now in Beta for Team Fortress 2 giving players the power to sell in-game items to other players with Steam Wallet funds.

To get things started, the Market is limited to?Team Fortress 2 consumables and tools, including paints, keys, and crates. Inside your Steam Inventory, anything that is ?Marketable? can be sold on. Once this initial phase of testing is completed more items will be added from TF2 as well as items for other games.

Valve?s trade system has proved so sucessful that the Steam Market is a natural evolution for Steam. ?Valve?s?Tony Paloma added:

?With over a half million trades made every week, the trading system has been very successful. Extending game economies beyond trades and giving players a way to turn gameplay into funds for new items and games is a key component for moving that success forward.?

During the Beta, Valve will be taking??5% as the Steam Transaction Fee but anyone wanting to try this out should read through the FAQ carefully as there?s mentions of fees all over the place. Kerchiiingggg.

A deliberate language barrier

THE United States and Britain are two countries "divided by a common language", George Bernard Shaw allegedly quipped.

This statement, amusingly paradoxical on the face of it, might be more accurate than it seems. On "War of words: The language paradox explained", evolutionary biologist Mark Pagel argues that languages proliferate to differentiate competing groups.

If so, a shared tongue is not what the transatlantic rivals would have wanted. Sure enough, they quickly diverged; some of the differences between US and British spellings seem to have arisen as part of a knowing attempt to widen the gulf.

So perhaps it was Shaw's fellow wit Oscar Wilde who got closer to the mark when he observed in his 1887 story The Canterville Ghost that "we have really everything in common with America nowadays, except, of course, language".

Fed expected to revamp bond buying program

(AP) ? The Federal Reserve is wrapping up 2012 the way it began the year, searching for ways to help a U.S. economy that is still struggling with high unemployment and sub-par growth.

The expectation is that the Fed will announce a revamped bond-buying plan at the conclusion of their second day of discussions on Wednesday. The Fed's policy statement will be followed by the release of a revised economic outlook and a news conference with Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke.

If the central bank does revamp its bond purchases, the goal would be to keep downward pressure on long-term interest rates and encouraged individuals and businesses to borrow and spend more.

The Fed's final meeting of the year is being held against the backdrop of the looming "fiscal cliff," the sharp tax increases and spending cuts that will hit the economy in January if Congress and President Barack Obama are unable to reach an agreement this month to avert them.

Bernanke has said that the Fed's efforts will not be able to rescue the economy if the budget negotiations fail and the country does go over the fiscal cliff.

Fears of the cliff have led some U.S. companies to delay expanding, investing and hiring. Manufacturing has slumped. Consumers have cut back on spending. Unemployment remains a still-high 7.7 percent. If higher taxes and government spending cuts were to last for much of 2013, most experts say the economy would sink into another recession.

The expectation is that the Fed will unveil a program Wednesday to buy $45 billion a month in long-term Treasurys. That would replace an expiring program called Operation Twist. With Twist, the Fed sold $45 billion a month in short-term Treasurys and used the proceeds to buy the same amount in longer-term Treasurys.

Twist didn't expand the Fed's investment portfolio, it just reshuffled the holdings. But the Fed has run out of short-term securities to sell. So to maintain its pace of long-term Treasury purchases and to keep long-term rates low, it must spend more and increase its portfolio.

The new bond-purchase plan would join a program announced in September. Under that program, the Fed is buying $40 billion a month in mortgage bonds to try to force already record-low home-loan rates lower in a bid to encourage home buying. The total Fed bond purchases from the two programs would remain $85 billion.

"A little better unemployment report for November doesn't change the Fed's view that the economy needs additional help," said Diane Swonk, chief economist at Mesirow Financial.

If the Fed decides not to replace Twist with a new bond-buying program, the monthly amount of its long-term Treasury purchases would decline by half. Long-term borrowing rates might rise as a result.

When the Fed pumps more money into the financial system and adds to its portfolio, it's called quantitative easing, or QE. Critics argue that QE risks fueling inflation later. The Fed's portfolio totals nearly $2.9 trillion ? more than three times its size before the 2008 financial crisis.

The Fed has launched three rounds of QE since the financial crisis hit. In announcing QE3 in September, the Fed said it would keep buying mortgage bonds until the job market improved substantially. It also extended its plan to keep its benchmark short-term rate near zero through at least mid-2015. And it raised the possibility of taking other steps.

Skeptics note that rates on mortgages and many other loans are already at or near all-time lows. So any further declines in rates engineered by the Fed might offer little economic benefit.

Inside and outside the Fed, a debate has raged over whether the Fed's actions have helped support the economy over the past four years, whether they will ignite inflation later and whether they should be extended.

The Fed is also expected to resume discussions on how to signal future policy moves to the public more clearly. Since August 2011, the Fed has identified a target date to try to reassure markets that it doesn't plan to raise short-term rates soon. Some Fed officials, however, oppose using a target date to signal the earliest when it might start raising rates. They've been urging that future interest-rate moves be linked to how the economy is faring as measured by unemployment and inflation.

Many private economists expect no change in the Fed's communications strategy this week.
